Repeating words in texts is an addiction (and how to solve it)

I could simply write here for you not to repeat words during a text and to be satisfied, but I want to help you understand everything that is behind the process of writing better text.

We write as we speak. And so, eventually, we actually end up carrying oral addictions to the paper, or rather to the screen. Repeating words not only takes away the reader’s attention as it is a totally avoidable practice.

One of the most iconic scenes from the movie of the ogre Shrek occurs in a situation where they are traveling to a distant place and all the time the character of the donkey repeats: “- We have arrived!” Many times. Until monster and Princess Fiona get angry and retort with a not quite emphatic.

Why do we repeat words so much?

I could simply write here for you not to repeat words during a text and to be satisfied, but I want to help you understand everything that is behind the process of writing better text. Much more than just repeating rules, I want you to understand.

When I began to notice that I often said the same word within a content, I had to investigate the origin of that custom. Some ideas I could trace.

We do not have vocabulary

The first thing that came to my mind was that I had to confess that my vocabulary was not as rich as I had imagined. Repetition is the greatest expression that we lack enough words to express the variations of our language. Repeat is really one of the

We write as we speak

A second perception is that one of the most classic mistakes is to confuse language with channels. We can not simply explain something through a text the way we do in a book. Although it is necessary to maintain a dialogue and a certain personality, we repeat many words without noticing that we should take this care in a written matter and without intonation.

We lack synonyms

Do you know when you want to explain something, but you do not know how to explain it? Well, this may be the best evidence that we need to learn variations of meaningful words. This will not only enrich our way of communicating precisely, but it will also solve the limitations.

Sometimes it is allowed to repeat

Having said all this above, a caveat is needed. Not always repeating is a mortal sin. There is in the mind an idea that repetition is pedagogical.

There is an educational side to stress. Therefore, only within this possibility is it possible that there is a certain frequency of the same terms. Except for this situation, there is also an instructive logic in repetition.

A hint of how to fix it

For those who suffer from this evil, a good solution is the Synonyms website, a mandatory database for those who want to write. (The extra tip is the equally important Antonyms.)

Whenever I start a text, and I propose to write, I open one tab to my text editor and the other to this site so that whenever I notice that there has been an unnecessary repetition, I may have new possibilities.

It is a way to learn more as you write and also solve this problem once and for all. Repeating too much will drive your reader away. That this is the last time I need to say it, agreed?
